French artist Lyndie Dourthe creates ethereal, delicate pieces often encased in glass which combine vintage imagery with contemporary handmade elements to create a story and something truely unique.

Where are you based?

I lived in Paris for 15 years and I moved to Nice 3 years ago.

What is your background in textiles?

I studied Textile Design for two years at Duperré school in Paris which is one of the four public applied art schools in Paris for fashion, illustration, design, etc…) I graduated in 2002. After doing a lot of internships in the industry, I started to work for my own and be my own boss.

How do you describe your work?

My work is strange and delicate things focusing on nature, the human body, love, life and death…

How do you create a piece?

To start I use sketchbooks. I write and draw all of my ideas on paper and I try to make it real. I glue pictures on it, too. Sometimes some ideas work better than I thought, but sometimes not. To have all these sketchbooks, old and new, helps me to find inspiration.

How do you decide whether to create your own image or use a vintage illustrations?

For me this is exactly the same thing, I use these elements to tell a story: if I need an ear, for example I find one or I make one. If I have the choice, that’s better. It depends to the composition and colours of the piece .

How long does a piece take to make?

I never make one piece on it’s own, it’s always several pieces in the same time, so I don’t really know.

What is your career highlight so far?

I don’t think about it. I don’t care.

Do you have any advice for aspiring textile artists?

My advice is to answer to this simple (and so hard, too) question : Who are you ?

Would you like to add anything?

Yes, It is very important for me to be part of several groups – artists, artisans or designers, local or not, to share our points of view, ideas, projects, etc… We are stronger together.
